Groundwork 101 Lesson Plan

Chelsea Canedy explains exactly what groundwork is, why it is so important, and how you can implement groundwork into your routine to build a better relationship with your horse.

In this lesson, Chelsea will introduce you to all the necessary equipment, some of her personal favorites as well as alternatives you can use if you're working on a budget.

In this lesson, Chelsea discusses the importance of consistency in communication through vocal cues with your horse. Chelsea also explains how horses communicate through pressure and release. She takes you through all the different ways you can successfully communicate with your horse including the techniques of shaping and bridging.

In this lesson, Chelsea takes you through your first groundwork exercise: leading your horse. While this may seem straightforward, leading your horse is the basis for everything you do with your horse. Chelsea demonstrates exactly how to successfully lead your horse in order to build better communication while also troubleshooting along the way.

 

In this lesson, Chelsea takes you through your second groundwork exercise: backing up. This exercise is crucial in building respect and trust between you and your horse. Chelsea demonstrates exactly how to successfully back up your horse on cue while also troubleshooting along the way.

In this lesson, Chelsea takes you through your third groundwork exercise: moving the hips and shoulders. This exercise will allow for your horse to become more attentive to you and what you are requesting of them. It’s a way to connect and further communicate in a more advanced manner. Chelsea demonstrates exactly how to successfully move the hips and shoulders while also troubleshooting along the way.

In this lesson, Chelsea takes you through your fourth groundwork exercise: working on a circle. Like Chelsea previously stated, lunging is not the same thing as doing intentional groundwork however working your horse on a circle is a useful tool that can accomplish many things. Chelsea demonstrates exactly how to successfully work your horse on a circle to improve communication while also troubleshooting along the way.

In this lesson, Chelsea takes you through your fifth groundwork exercise: creating and managing energy. Working on a circle, Chelsea demonstrates how to add distance and energy without losing focus and connection with your horse. Chelsea demonstrates exactly how to successfully create and manage your horses energy while also troubleshooting along the way.

Groundwork doesn’t have to be time consuming! In this lesson, Chelsea shows you exactly how you can implement groundwork into your already existing routine whether it means doing an exercise before you ride, while you're mounting, after you dismount or during your post ride cool down.
